Hi there! We’re really glad you’ve dropped by!
Smarter Happier is written by Nathan and Kirsty Russell, a dynamic husband-and-wife team with big dreams, poor impulse control and the not-so-occassional bout of indecision! We both work long hours while trying to raise our three beautiful children. Our lives were filled with early starts, late finishes and weekends of lawn-mowing, house-cleaning and little opportunity for quality family time. We thought this was what middle-class life in suburbia was all about, but we just weren’t happy. So we started looking for new, different and better ways of doing things.
Hi, I’m Nathan
I’m a father and husband in search of a better way to live my life by putting my family first and managing my work in a smarter way. I am preparing to make the transition to work from home so that I can be around for my family when they need me and I want them. I am changing my life for the benefit of the people I love, so that I can better enjoy my work and live a longer, more purposeful and happier life. I want to spend more time at home with my kids so that I can attend the important moments in their life; so that I can indulge my wife with the love and attention she deserves; and so that I can inspire my kids through my actions not my dreams.
Smarter Happier is where I share my journey. Here I am honest about the things I do as I build my freelancing business, develop my niche websites and make more time for the people that are important to me. I will be sharing my successes and mistakes, my insights, discoveries and wins.
Working smarter for a happier life is my new catchphrase, my slogan. It is all about changing the way you work and live in order to enjoy a more productive, fulfilling life. It is about challenging the preconceived notions of what “work” is and to find a balance between earning an income and actually being able to enjoy the fruits of your labour. It is about finding smarter ways to do things in order to lead a happier life.
Hi, I’m Kirsty
I suppose, in a way, I’m the reason for this whole site! In March 2014 I suffered a suspected stroke which changed everything for us. I was a dedicated worker, loving wife, caring mother, blogger and special needs advocate. I’m still all those things but I now have a better grip on what actually matters. Family comes before everything else and we are trying to build a life where we work as little as we can to live, not live so we can endlessly work.
Instead of waiting until retirement to see the world and experience it’s richness, we’ve decided to work travel into our lives now. We want to share the wonder of travel with our kids and create special memories that will last a lifetime. We have spent too long playing it safe and living “the dream”. It’s time for us to make a change and start living “our dream” of a happier and more fulfilling life.
I’m also looking forward to sharing my journey to self-employment. After 19 years working for the government, working for myself is a massive shift in focus. But I’m keen to share the good, the bad, and the plain old ugly sides of working from home. I hope you can join me, and Nathan, as we come to grips with living our dream of working smarter for a happier life.
